Vacation Plans Have Almost Started

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — whatigotsofar @ 7:46 am

Well, I’ve started putting some more consideration towards my vacation. I told my boss that I am taking a vacation in either January or February. I’ve got a couple of bucks squirrelled away. All I need now is the destination.

Currently, the Canadian dollar is at an advantage over the American dollar. This doesn’t happen very often so it may be good to go somewhere in the US to take advantage of the mighty Loonie. And the Canadian dollar has dipped a bit next to the Euro so maybe Europe will have to wait.

So, here are the possible destinations I’ve thought of so far.

  • New York City. Obviously a wonderful city. Lots of art and museums. Lots of night-time hotspots. Lots of music. But it is New York City in the winter. There is more annual snowfall in NYC than there is right in the GTA.
  • Texas. Probably some of the more southern parts of the state. I’m a bit of a fickle history nut. San Antonio obviously has the Alamo. But that’s really all I know about Texas history. The Alamo. There’s millions upon millions of people in Texas. Its pretty friggin’ huge and there’s oil there. Some interesting stuff must have happened there in the past two hundred years. Beats me what that might be though. To better my inform my decision about whether or not to go to Texas, I’ve sent away for some tourism pamphlets and books and such about Texas. If there’s something in those that can help sway my decision, then off to Texas I shall go.
  • Las Vegas. I’m not much of a gambler and it seems like one of those places it would be better to go with some friends. I will be traveling solo. Vegas may be a no-go for me. Besides, I need somebody to hold me back if I get shitfaced and try to marry some wrinkled and old cocktail waitress looking for a third husband to marry and divorce. (Yes, everything I know about Las Vegas I learned from watching television.)
  • Washington D.C. I would love to go back to the Smithsonian and actually see the whole thing. Otherwise, I’ve done all the other touristy things there. In case your curious, President Lincoln didn’t really say anything to me when I asked him for advice. And President Jefferson didn’t seem upset at all that I went to Lincoln first.
  • Cleveland – I might have to go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame once in my life. But it feels like more of a summer long weekend trip to me. That way the weather’s nice and I can see an Indians game.
  • New Orleans. I could go to Mardi Gras, but I’d like to think that I’m too old to just get drunk off my ass for an entire week. Besides, I’d be that guy all the college kids point at and say “Who brought the old dude?” Its not like I’m that old. I’m still on the pretty side of thirty but I’ve reached that point where I can no longer physically handle shotgunning cans of beer. I’m at that casually-drinking-Jack-Daniels-until-I-realize-half-the-bottle-is-gone-then-feeling-like-a-zombie-the-next-day age.

If anybody reading this has been to any of these places and knows something I don’t, speak up. If anybody has some good ideas for some other places, speak up louder.

  1. Las Vegas isn’t a city for those who travel alone, except if you’re a pervert, because there’s a lot of other kinds of entertainment than slot machines.

  2. There are some good choices in there, and some of the problems you’ll have with them is the weather that happens around Jan/Feb. I was in NYC last Feburary and it was cold and icy as hell. That being said, you can’t beat it for activity, musuems, etc. and would be a good choice.

YOu nailed Vegas as that’s better with a group of friends unless you’re a degenerate gambler.

New Orleans would be a good choice (avoid Mardi Gras) as there is always a party going on. That being said, make sure you stay in the French Quarter as that seems to be the area that has been re-built the best and is the safest. Good music around everywhere.

As for Texas, I am obviously biased, however, Austin would be a good choice as San Antonio is only an hour drive south (and you could check out the Alamo one day). THere is a ton of live music in Austin, and it’s a cool, laid-back city.

The only other place I would consider is somewhere in California – maybe San Francisco. Good luck.

  3. My brother and his girl are going to cleveland this weekend. Sorry that I can’t go with but I have a family vacation planned around the same time. Also our definitions of vacation differ so it might not have been for the best any ways.

  4. Texas is the best choice since me and BDS are from Texas, so obviously the coolest people live here ;)

  5. modobs – yup, there’s slut machines.

BDS – live music… hmm… I have heard some good things about the Austin music scene. hmm… Theres a point for Texas.

Bob – why they going to Cleveland?

JLee – Cool people? Where was your Springer-esque incident? How about some cool places to go or things to do?

  6. If I could go anywhere it would be DC. Since you’re a fan of history you’d be a kid in a candy store there.

  7. Other than the Smithsonian, I’ve seen pretty much everything there. Still need something to do at night, I mean other than get some whores.

  9. Come to D.C.!

Buy the best crack in the lower 48!

Laugh at the eccentric gay people in Dupont Circle!

Throw eggs at the White House!

Finally, D.C. is awesomer than Texas because I live just outside it, and I am better than this BDS and JLee.

  11. 1st off why don’t you plan a trip with your friends, take the same vacation time??

New York, I went there many many moons ago and had a great time as there is soooo much to do and see. The weather though will suck and you’ll obviously be walking around a lot outside. So exnay on NY.

Texas, I’ve never been but I hear everyone is a hottie down there!!

DC, again I went many many moons ago but again it will be a little chilly no?

Cleveland is more of a weekend thing unless you can find something else to do there.

New Orleans, i’ve never been, might be a good time!!

I haven’t helped at all have I LOL.

  15. Wait… why is vacationing with friends not going to happen? I have put many offers forward but you always turn them down.
