Hubbaflubbadibbadabbadoo

Everytime I walk down the street,
I hear the tap tap of my feet,
All I wanna sing is hubbaflubbadibbadabbadoo
Bibbillybobbilyboo.

Sorry about that, I had to sing this morning. Just something so skimmillybobbillyboo about this morning. Or quite possibly, somebody spiked my coffee.

Okay, that’s out of my system.

I’d like to take this opportunity to write about Savage Steve Holland. I know what you’re thinking. you think Savage Steve Holland is some lame whipping boy wrestler from the 1970s. He’s not though. In fact, he’s a director.

His most notable work came in the 1980s. He directed three very 80s movies (and wrote the first two): Better Off Dead, One Crazy Summer and How I Got Into College. He is also the guy who animated that lovable Whammy character from the game show Press Your Luck. He spent much of the 1990s and beyond directing television programs, both live motion and animation.

This past weekend, I saw his third of three motion pictures from the 1980s, How I Got Into College. The movie was pretty stupid but it had the Savage Steve Holland trademarks: wacky irony, explosions, pro wrestling, preppies getting the beaten by the lovable loser and Curtis Armstrong.

When most people discuss cheesy 80s movies, the name John Hughes always comes up. I got nothing against John Hughes, he made some good movies, but Steve Holland’s movies are just so wacky and out there. There really is nothing quite like the films he’s made. He found a way to bring cartoonish gags and humour into live motion films. He also has an odd way of picking songs that actually last. Every 80s movie has 80s music. But his films, have songs that lasted past the 80s. Whether it was Van Halen, the Eurythmics or Edie Brickell, it’s like he knew how to differentiate between 80s cheese and 80s quality.

Please send some energy my way. Maybe some 80’s music would do it.

  2. Jillian Says:

LOL… I never even heard of this guy.

Of course that’s not saying much…. there’s a ton of stuff I haven’t heard of.

  3. wiwille Says:

I will say this about him, he was not pretencious about his filmmaking. John Hughes clearly is.

  4. Miss Ash Says:

Wiwille, JH’s has a reason to be pretentious haha!!

As for this other guy, i’ve never heard of him.

  5. Sparkling Red Says:

Better Off Dead was a great movie.

Is it just a coincidence that I dreamed about John Cusack last night? He was buying a turtleneck sweater and he was shorter in person. I pretended not to recognize him.

Maxie - Some good pump up 80s music, try the Rocky IV soundtrack. Or you can do what I apparently do, DLR scat!

Jillian - rent One Crazy Summer, that is all.

wiwille - how pretentious can you be when you repeatedly hire Curtis Armstrong?

Miss Ash - rent One Crazy Summer, but first, watch Casablanca.

Spark - I can see him wearing a turtleneck. He’s got that sort of shoulder/neck/chin combo to pull it off. I can just see him at the store picking out a turtleneck and he’s stammering his way through trying to pick a colour. The shy, cute sales girl is trying to help him but seems to be mesmerized by his lack of confidence. A minute later, Jack Black walks by, points to the blue one so John picks the grey one instead then returns a minute later to exchange the grey for the blue. See, anybody can write a John Cusack romantic comedy.

  7. Bob Says:

one crazy summer wasn’t that great. You over-rate it because you romanticized it was a kid. We all do that with movies and such.

  8. whatigotsofar Says:

Bob - I’ve known you just as long as that movie and I’ve never romanticized you. And aren’t we both glad about that.

  9. Random Chick Says:

Man, I can’t keep up with you…you have been prolific in the past few days but here I go:

Okay, being a child of the 80s, Better Off Dead is one of my all-time favorites! Who could ever forget the vengeful paperboy hounding Lane Meyer for “two dollars!” Ahhh, good times. I never knew that the dude who wrote that movie was a wrestler…wow. Who knew they had brains??

I’ve been stuck at work having gotten everything done lickity split and quick, so, I blog. Hence the lots of stuff to write about.
