Last year I wrote a Christmas meme. A silly little thing about the capitalist experience of Christmas. It was a nice little piece of filler for me.
Last year, a bunch of people picked up the meme and did it themselves.
As I was perusing Google Reader, I noticed a new post by Claire of The Country Mouse Tales. God bless sweet Claire, she resurrected it this year. How amazing is that? (Yeah, I’ve got real low expectations.)
Last night as I was about to go to bed, the telephone rang. It was Bob. Columbia is back in town and he wanted to go out. Sure it was my bedtime but I don’t get to see my old friend that often, seeing as how he lives in another country.
I quickly changed into clothes acceptable for being worn in public and I was out the door.
The three of us met at The Honest Lawyer, a bar in Richmond Hill. It’s a weird little place. It’s not the normal sort of bar. Besides having pool tables, it also has all sorts of other games including a Nintendo Wii on the big screen. Rock Band was the game for the night.
I’ve never played Rock Band and I continued my tradition of not playing it last night. First of all, there’s the moral dilemma I have with subjecting other people to songs I do not like. I did not feel it was appropriate for the bar to be subjected to that bloody Weezer tune twice in twenty minutes. Rock Band does not have really have a great selection of tunes. It really only has the hits and such. No obscure album cuts and I didn’t notice any really out there songs, songs with weird time signatures and beat changes.
Secondly, if I wanted be a rock star, I’d have picked up a guitar a long time ago and rocked that shit.
It was great to see my old friend. I don’t think I’ve seen Columbia since early in the summer. That’s probably the best thing about Christmas. Even though some of my friends have gone on to bigger and better things in far away places, as long as their parents are still in Richmond Hill, I know they’ll be coming back for Christmas.
So, I didn’t get home and settled until nearly 1AM. I’m feeling mighty zombiesh right now. Mind if I chew your ear?

Dude Rockband has some really obscure and funny tracks, but no one plays them. I love the Timmy song from South Park. It’s hard though.

I wouldn’t really call a song from South Park obscure. Especially after there was a show devoted to Guitar Hero.

I tried telling him there are a lot of song choices.
meanwhile, I also feel zombiesh.
Did you have brains for lunch too?

No obscure album cuts
Rock Band is a very fun game but I totally agree on this sentiment. The same really holds true for any other rhythm game. Whenever I see that the only Clash song on their track list is “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” I die a little inside. Their cover of “I Fought The Law” isn’t even obscure, at least include that!
Or how about Wrong ‘em Boyo or whatever the heck that tune is called. Or better yet, some good old school Irish punk like SLF. Haven’t seen them pop up in any Guitar Hero/Rock Band track lists.

Heh. I’m all about the revamping!
Cxx
Really, thank you. You brightened up my day.

I did the same thing with a friend from another country over Thanksgiving, and as you noted, it’s one of the best parts of the holidays is catching people you haven’t seen for a long time (even if it means being out past yr. bedtime).
Exactly. I’m willing for give up a bit of sleep (not that I really get a heckuva lot anyway) now and then for the out-of-towners.

Maybe they should have Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance on Rock Band. There’s a section that switches back and forth between 16th note-quadruplets and triplets that we practiced for hours in the high school orchestra to get it just right for the commencement ceremony. It would be a nice change for the patrons at the pub.
Yeah, when’s Violin Hero hitting the street. Or how about Cello Champ.

I can only take so much of Rock Band myself before it becomes little much.
Did you bowl?
nope

You probably wouldn’t like my ears.
How nice that you got to see your friend, though. Nothing like catching up.
But you would be right to shoot me on your way to the book depository.

Cello champ? You’re funny.
Do you know what they say about women who play the cello? They do it sitting down with their legs spread open.

I’m extremely greedy with my sleep… I rarely give it up for anyone or anything.
Great friend who moved to another country is back in town. And you’d rather sleep. Sheesh, guess I won’t swing by O-town if you have to make your bedtime.
