Music Guessing Game: the Answers

May 13, 2008

Music Guessing Game: First Round

  1. Heat of the Moment by Asia - I’ve loved this song since I was a chubby little kid.
  2. Like a Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan - In my opinion, the only great Dylan song. Sorry folks, the guy’s overrated.
  3. Sweet Child o’ Mine by Guns ‘N Roses - I remember this one time, me and buddy in high school would use our spare period to go to the local music store and try out guitars and such. This one salesman, he picked up the Gibson SG and tried to play this song and flubbed it big time. I thought everybody knew the rule: SG = AC/DC, Les Paul = GNR.
  4. In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins - Who doesn’t air drum to this song?
  5. Summer of ‘69 by Bryan Adams - Remember when Bryan Adams was this young hotshot from the Pacific Northwest? I do.
  6. You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC - It’s not Whole Lotta Rosie, but it has it’s moments.
  7. Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry - “You know that new sound you lookin’ for, well listen to this!”
  8. Free Your Mind by En Vogue - This song just rocks.
  9. Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey - Yeah, it’s really overplayed and Journey was better before Johnathan Cain joined up, but what are ya gonna do, really? It’s Journey. It’s the one cheesy band we’re allowed to like.
  10. Mysterious Ways by U2 - I wanted to put The Fly instead, but I thought that might be too difficult for the first round.

Music Guessing Game: Intermediate Round

  1. Beat It by Michael Jackson - Probably should have put Eat It by Weird Al instead. Just to throw people off.
  2. Iron Man by Black Sabbath - I have to put some Sabbath in here.
  3. Always on the Run by Lenny Kravitz - Romeo oh Romeo Blue, where for art thou Romeo?
  4. Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand - Boy, did these guys turn to shit fast or what?
  5. Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple - A song about itself being recorded. Interesting…
  6. Under Pressure by Queen & David Bowie - I still can’t believe somebody thought this was Vanilla Ice.
  7. Street Spirit by Radiohead - I had to put something for the pretentious crowd.
  8. I Believe in a Thing Called Love by The Darkness - These guys rock.
  9. Help! by The Beatles - Hello, The Beatles, had to put them somewhere in here.
  10. She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult - I love The Cult. They’re one of my favourite bands.

Music Guessing Game: Expert Round

  1. Laid by James - I was surprised so many people got this one. It’s such a been done snippet of sound I used.
  2. More Human than Human by White Zombie - These guys sucked, but were still kinda cool. They had the right attitude.
  3. Lovefool by The Cardigans - I still catch myself singing along to this tune in a real bad falsetto from time to time.
  4. Black by Pearl Jam - I put this one in because I can never remember what it’s called. I thought maybe I wasn’t the only one who had that problem.
  5. Fire in the Head by The Tea Party - Memories of the Gasworks.
  6. Walk This Way by Aerosmith - I was hoping to catch somebody thinking it was the Run DMC with Aerosmith version. Caught one person.
  7. Where is the Love by The Black Eyed Peas - Yes Bob, I like this song. Get over it.
  8. De Do Do Do De Da Da Da by The Police - Another tune I used to rock out to when I was a chubby little kid.
  9. Give It Away by The Red Hot Chili Pepppers - This one’s a gimme.
  10. Hot for Teacher by Van Halen - That snippet is one of my favourite things in existance. I just love DLR’s attitude.

Music Guessing Game: Final Round

  1. Hope You’re Feeling Better by Santana - I wanted something by a well known act but didn’t have a single or distinct lead vocalist.
  2. Homosapien by Pete Shelley - Props to anybody who knows this tune.
  3. Be My Baby by The Ronettes - The Dirty Dancing soundtrack, ’nuff said.
  4. Groove Me by King Floyd - First heard this tune in a blue jeans commercial. Cool song and pretty hard to find.
  5. Remedy by The Black Crowes - I love the Crowes. They rock.
  6. How Soon is Now by The Smiths - Something more for the pretentious crowd.
  7. Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult - I have a fever, and the only perscription is more cow bell! Okay, different song, but I had to make it somewhat hard. This is the final round.
  8. Numb by Holly McNarland - How do you know someone is a good artist, when they’re butt ugly like this chick.
  9. Girlfriend by Matthew Sweet - One of the few times I was won over by a music video.
  10. Valerie by Steve Winwood - I heard the Eric Prydz rip-off of this tune the day before I compiled this round.
  11. Rockin’ is Ma Business by The Four Horsemen - Rockin’ is ma business and business is good! Now, who the eff is Weedeater?

When writing this post, I realized something. I accidentally put 11 songs in the final round. Ooops. Oh well.

And for the winner, I think you know who you are at this point. Pat yourself on the back, you’re a bigger music nerd than I ever thought possible. As for your winnings, you can take your $25 iTunes gift certificate or… you can risk it all, for what’s in the mystery box.

Weekend Recap: Days for the Ladies

May 11, 2008

Friday

After work I scooted down to the closest Godiva Chocolatier. Mother’s Day was approaching and my mother likes chocolates. Okay, maybe ‘likes’ is an understatement. She’s willing to inflict pain on those who would stand in between her and chocolate.

I did my usual picking out of 8 pairs of chocolate truffles. As I paid, I was given four boxes of chocolates (some sort of prepackaged chocolate domes or something) on the house. Godiva was doing some Mother’s Day promotion. Spend so much money, get so much chocolate free. Now, what am I going to do with all this chocolate?

I MSNed with my buddy Columbia from New York City. Always nice to hear (well, read) from him.

Friday was one of those days were I was feeling fat. Probably had something to do with the Tim Hortons maple promotions. Regardless, I have to refocus myself on tightening.

At night, a bunch of us (Bob, Chrissy & Boston) met up to celebrate Janet’s birthday.

(If anybody is curious, this is the birthday I was trying to shop for last weekend. I eventually got out again and shopped slightly more effectively. Got to the store well before closing time. I didn’t want to get Janet a gift card. Although the gift card was going to be my last ditch effort if I couldn’t find anything. Instead, a made a little gift bag of things. A book, a couple of CDs and a mug. I tried to find some sort of coffee or tea to put in the mug, but I couldn’t find anything I felt appropriate and I didn’t want to go to a second store. I dunno, I hope I done good. My goal, get her something she’ll like, something she might not have ever gotten for herself or something she wouldn’t have thought to get for herself and something that says “friend” unmistakenably. Again, I hope I done good.)

We went to some rinky-dink bar in Toronto called Locals. Walked in there and saw this huge air brush painting of Phil Lynett (the guy from Thin Lizzy) on the wall but the band was playing some good ol’ bluegrass. Pretty cool to me. I didn’t see any sexy chicas in the place though. It looked like an older crowd.

At the bar, beer was drunk, fun times were had, one big lesson was learned. If somebody says “How about this ‘badass’ beer?” Turn it down. It’s bad and tastes like ass.

Saturday

Up at 7:53AM. Out the door, on my way to work at 8:12AM.

At work, I got some stuff done pretty quick. My boss called, said he was coming in within thirty minutes or so. Of course, with him, that means like an hour or so. I sat around, wrote this blog post upto this point. Pretty much writing it because I’m at my desk, trying not to fall asleep. It’s a quiet day and pretty much without my boss giving me some stuff to do, I’m done everything. I can’t give the plans to the clients if my boss doesn’t prepare the plans, right?

So I spent much of Saturday morning, slowly surfing the web from my workstation.

Eventually, I just got fed up and left.

As soon as I got home, my phone rang. It was my boss. He wanted to know where I was. I told him I went home. He said he didn’t have his keys with him. He wouldn’t be able to get into work. Too bad, I wasn’t leaving my house at that point.

I took a much needed nap.

In the evening, Bob and the Wonder Twins came to my place. We played some Trivial Pursuit: Warner Bros. Edition. Very hard, very very hard. Questions about obscure Hanna Barbera cartoons are not easy. Afterwards, we went to Tim Hortons and hung out at the corner gas station. Pretty lame for a Saturday night.

Sunday

It was Mother’s Day. My family went to the banquet hall my brother’s wedding will be held at. His fiancee also came with her parents and a brother. The eight of us celebrated Mother’s Day together. The hall looks like a nice place. The grounds there look pretty nice too. My brother and his fiancee are going to have the ceremony right there, outdoors, in the hall’s grounds. The hall is on something like thirty plus acres of land. Lots of trees for my brother to hide in if he gets cold feet.

Music Guessing Game: Expert Round

May 1, 2008

Wow, that second round did not really thin the herd. Okay, it did, but the competition at the top seems a bit closer now. Somebody has climbed up and snagged the top spot. Great! Here are the scores after two rounds (individual round scores in the parentheses):

Miss Ash: 27 ( 7/20 )
Bob: 26 ( 10/16 )
Maxie: 17 ( 3/14 )
Darshan: 10 ( 10/0 )
Grace: 7 ( 1/6 )*
Sarebeth: 6 ( 6/0 )

* Grace, I’m still not sure what sort of punishment to dole out on you. Maybe I’ll deduct some points. Maybe I’ll just ridicule you on a daily basis. I haven’t decided yet.

Here is the expert round mp3. Good luck everybody. You sure will need it. Each correct song and artist is worth 3 points this time. Submissions will be accepted upto May 7th, 2008 at 11:59PM my time.

If you’re not sure which ones you missed, confirm your answers with Miss Ash, she got all ten songs right.

Music Guessing Game & HIMYM Revelations

April 30, 2008

Today is the last day to submit answers for Music Guessing Game 2. It looks like people are keeping their answers closer to themselves. Nobody’s putting answers in the comments. Hmm… The competition is heating up.

I’ve prepared the mp3 file for the next round, the expert round. This one, I tells ya, will seperate the men from the boys. Eeeep, it’s a doosy. It will be posted either later today or tomorrow morning.

This season of How I Met Your Mother has been disappointing. The show has obviously peaked already. Now it seems like all the writers can do is tease the audience. I don’t like being teased. This week’s episode, the audience was teased with the story of how a goat made it into Ted’s 30th birthday party. (We all know goats are for 50th birthdays, not the 30th.)

I’ve also disliked the implementation of Barney and Robin doing it. (You know what I mean.) I don’t think I can have any sympathy for Robin anymore. I lost too much respect for the character. I’ve always had issues with Robin before, you know, being a bitch and all, but now, I’m completely indifferent about her. She could be written off the show and I simply wouldn’t care.

And what’s the deal with Marshall’s hair. Since the show returned to the air after the writer’s strike, Marshall’s hair has been this awful floppy thing.

(And now, a joke is for Bob.) Simon has bright red butt blood. Point for Simon.

Music Guessing Game, Intermediate Round

April 24, 2008

Before we take a shot at round 2 of the music guessing game, let’s take a look at the scores.

Bob: 10
Darshan: 10
Miss Ash: 7
Sarebeth: 6
Maxie: 3
Grace: 1

Not sure which ones you got wrong, ask Bob or Darshan, they seem to know them all.

To the folks trailing, don’t worry, there’s plenty of time. In round 2, each correct title and artist is worth 2 points. But this round will be a bit harder.

Good luck everybody, you’re gonna need it. This round will be open until April 30th, 2008.

Music Guessing Game

April 23, 2008

Today is the last day to enter a submission in the first round of the music guessing game.

I should have the second round uploaded and ready for tomorrow. Maybe, I haven’t compiled the mp3 yet.
