Much Too Young To Feel This Damn Old
July 3, 2008
For the past few months, I’ve been working six days a week. For some people, work starts at 9:00AM and ends at 5:00PM. Not for me. I usually get to work around 7:00AM. It’s really busy lately on the workfront. Okay, Saturdays, I stroll in around 9, but still, I’m usually up pretty early everyday.
It’s rare, but sometimes I get invited to things on weeknights. Things I usually turn down. Trying to do things and go out and stuff and then having to be at work at 7 the next morning is very difficult for me. On the rare occasion I have a late weeknight, I’m a zombie the next day.
Tonight, I’ve been asked to go to some concert at some hole in the ground club downtown. I dislike shitty clubs. I dislike downtown Toronto. But I’m going anyway. An old high school buddy is trying to start up a promotion or something, so, I’m going to help fill up the place.
Chances are, the music will suck, the crowd will be a bunch of the promoter’s and bands’ friends and I will probably pass out and get bounced before midnight. Not from drinking, (I can’t drink if I gotta drive home*) but just from exhaustion. That would really suck.
But I’m going anyway. I’m still twenty-something. There’s no way I can feel this damn old yet. Seriously, I’m single, ain’t got no kids. Shouldn’t I at least try to live it up a bit. I’m going out on a school-night, oooohhhh. I’ve got to sow my wild oats before my hair turns grey. I don’t want to be that guy who has the midlife crisis at 35. I’ve got to feel young and act stupid and irresponsible while I’m still young enough to get away with it.
Last Saturday, I went to sleep before the Sun went down. Saturday night, out with friends, and I called it a day right after dinner. What the heck!
And this morning, as I got into my car to go to work, I realized I left the sunroof open all night. I didn’t rain (until I actually sat in the car this morning) but there was a definite dampness and humidity in the car. As well as some bugs and leaves and things. Well, that finally put an end to the new car smell I’ve been clinging to for the past couple of weeks.
* No public transit to anywhere near my house on off-peak hours.
